How To Keep Your Dog Cool In Summer

Imagine if we had all that fur to carry around on our bodies on hot days, its not ideal is it? Dogs can overheat much faster than we can, it can take only 15 minutes in the scorching heat for an old dogs body to shut down, please keep that in mind!

Now that summer is really upon us and we are expecting more hot days here in Australia for the next 1.5 months, we need to know the effective ways to keep our dogs cool throughout the day whether you are home or at work.

Here are many ways to help your dog stay cool:

1. Pup smoothies!
Not many people have tried this however dogs can have smoothies to, but just be mindful of what to put in them. A great smoothie you can make your dog is – Frozen banana, Frozen Strawberries, Frozen Blueberries with water and peanut butter. Blend up and serve in a small bowl or freeze them into ice trays for them to have as a pupsicle!

2. Cool Vests
These work great and you can get them at most pet stores, City Farmers have good ones and you can also get cheaper ones here. My mum used a cool vest on our family dog when she easily overheated with a condition she had, and it worked great. With most of these vests they are made with a special fabric that stays cool and all you have to do is dampen is and put it on your pooch!

3. Cold Baths
Ok so not freezing cold, but lukewarm/cool baths at home help a lot. Its best to do this at the beginning of the day if you know its going to be a warm one! Let your pooch air dry for most the day this way it keeps their skin cool not just their fur wet.

4. Cold Water
Make sure to ALWAYS have cold water in a bowl inside and outside the house whether you are home or not. Dogs can get very dehydrated a lot quicker than us, so this is very important. You can even add a few ice blocks to the water to cool it as well as they can snack on the block to keep them cool and occupied.

5. Ice Toys
These are great!  All you have to do is fill them with water, put them in the freezer for a few hours and your dog can keep cool for hours playing with it and chewing on it! Check this one out!

6. Wet Towels
Its great to place a wet towel in a cooler area where your dog regularly lays for him to keep cool in summer, and preferably near an aircon or fan.

7. Fans!
Keep a special pet fan for your dog when you are out, preferably in the room he tends to lay in most often and this will keep the air circulating and fresh.
